Pediculosis (Head Lice) Procedures

for Sunday School and Vacation Bible School

General Information

Each year our community experiences a number of cases of head lice.  Head lice is a common condition, especially among school aged children.  There is no way of preventing a child from acquiring lice.  The goal, therefore, should be to detect it quickly and clear it up as soon as possible.

The louse, which is the adult form, looks like a tiny crab and is grayish in color.  It lays its eggs (nits) on the shank of the hair close to the scalp.  Nits are teardrop in shape, about this size ( - ) and vary in color from yellowish brown to white.  Nits cannot be washed out or brushed out of the hair like dandruff or other debris that sometimes look like nits to the naked eye.  Dandruff will fall off, nits will not.  Lice are wingless insects and cannot fly or jump.  Watch for redness and itching in the scalp area.  A bright light directed at the scalp can be helpful in identifying the nits.

Exclusion

Students with head lice or nits (eggs) will be excluded from the religious education program immediately.  Students will be excluded from participation for a minimum of twenty-four hours after applying lice shampoo to remove the nits.

Readmission

Since the church does not have a full-time nurse on staff, students will need a note from a pediatrician/doctor to confirm that the students are “nit-free” before the students are allowed to resume participation in the religious education program when there is a known case of head lice.  If a doctor’s visit is a financial burden, please see the pastor for assistance.

Notification

Most parents have the impression that lice become established on people who are unclean, which is not true.  Consequently, known cases of head lice will be treated with sensitivity and as discretely as possible.  The decision to send a note home with all the other families participating in the religious education program when there is a known case of head lice will be up to the discretion of the Sunday School Superintendent or Vacation Bible School Director based on when the case was discovered and how it was handled thus far.

You are invited to attend!  Sunday Worship is at 11:00 a.m.
Communion is served the first Sunday of each month.
